Lejog day 24 Cheswick to Dunbar

We've finally made it to Scotland! Quite a scenic way to do it too, over the chain bridge across the River Tweed not far from Berwick. We passed a cyclist on the Scotland side of the bridge who was having a brief rest from pedalling. He had a QR code on his back, obviously hoping to attract sponsors for some good cause.

He turned up again at the Dolphin Inn independent hostel in Dunbar (which is where we're staying for two nights - another rest day tomorrow).  He's also cycling Land's End to John O'Groats and has taken twelve days to get here, half as many as it's taken us!

The ride today has been one of our longest - 36 miles and 2600 feet of ascent. The wind has blown again but nowhere near as badly as yesterday. It's tended to come at us sideways.

Not far short of Dunbar there was a very steep downhill section to a holiday park. My brakes were full on so the spare brake pads may come in handy if there are many more descents like that. Rosie ended up pushing her bike down the hill. While I was waiting I watched gannets dive bombing into the sea trying to catch their evening meal - a wonderful sight.

An excellent cycle path brought us safely into Dunbar for about the last six miles. It went under the A1 at one point which was quite handy as it allowed us to shelter from a brief downpour.

Every room at this hostel has a small turntable and a selection of vinyl records. Olivia Newton John was the first choice.

Week 4 is now completed - eleven more cycling days to John O'Groats.

We'll soon be off to downtown Dunbar searching for a suitable eating establishment, maybe one that serves beer!
