Lejog day 19 Temple Sowerby to Alston
We're back to pedalling after two days off. It's good to be back on the saddle! There was a bit of a waving off ceremony from our Sam and Louise, also from Katy and Pete across the road. Thanks Pete for making sure our bikes are still up for the challenge and to Sam for a very quick change of inner tube on Rosie's back wheel a couple of days ago.
At the end of the road was Kevin (fellow Eden Runner) to cheer us on the way. He would have cycled up to the top of Hartside with us but had just taken delivery of a new bike so that was his focus for the day. Good excuse not to cycle up Hartside I reckon!
David Lea (another Eden Runner) met us at Melmerby as arranged and he did cycle up to the top of Hartside with us - at our pace too - slow slow! At the top of Hartside a strange figure on the other side of the road appeared to be taking photos of us. It turned out to be John Myatt, yet another Eden Runner. It gave us a great boost to get such support from one and all. Thank you. John even bought ice creams for us. Generosity indeed!
I think the top of Hartside, at around 2000 feet above sea level, will be the highest point of the entire journey. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, the Lake District fells were clear to see as was the Solway Firth and Scotland - a great view.
The ascent of Hartside was one that we hadn't been particularly relishing. Five miles of uphill and about 1500 feet of ascent. However the gradient was very consistent and rideable as long as the appropriate gear was selected. Even though it was midweek there were still loads of motor bikes - one biker shouted something to us as he passed. Didn't hear what he said but I don't think it was rude! Lotus cars were the predominant ones passing us today. Too much money around!
We stayed at the top of Hartside for a while enjoying our ice cream then said farewell to David and John. After overheating slightly on the ascent the descent was just the opposite - a biting headwind to make it freezing cold! But it was downhill all the way so it didn't take long to get to Alston and our accommodation for the night.
Just off to Jack's takeaway for a gourmet meal. May manage a pint later as this place is licensed! Spurs playing Man United tonight in the Europa League Final- the battle of the Premier League's 16th and 17th teams so it's hardly a battle of the giants!
